Ochsner Opens First Iberville Area Location with OB/GYN Clinic

Ochsner’s Women’s Services Team to Provide Range of Services

Myra Bayes, Certified Nurse Midwife, has delivered babies and well-woman care in Plaquemine, Louisiana for the last thirteen years at a local women’s clinic.   When that clinic closed and the area’s only OB/GYN retired in 2012, Ochsner was quick to add Myra to the  Ochsner OB/Gyn team.  Myra, along with the rest of the staff,  began seeing patients this week at Ochsner’s first Iberville Parish location – Ochsner Health Center – Plaquemine.
“This clinic gives women in Plaquemine the option to have their care delivered in their own town.  They don’t have to travel and appointment access is very easy,” Bayes pointed out to a gathering of  Ochsner employees before the ribbon-cutting ceremonies began on Tuesday, March 26.

Eric McMillen, CEO Ochsner Baton Rouge Region and Dr. Ralph Dauterive, Ochsner Baton Rouge Vice-President of Medical Affairs and Chairman of the Ochsner OB/GYN department welcomed Iberville Parish residents and officials including Mitch Ourso, Jr., Parish President and several parish councilmen, to the clinic ribbon cutting at 10 a.m.

The clinic will be staffed by nurse practitioners, midwives and physicians within the Ochsner system.  “The only time that a woman will need to leave Plaquemine Parish for care is when she is delivering her baby or having surgery,”  Dr. Dauterive pointed out.

As Midwife Bayes toured visitors through the center she responded to questions about the difference between care delivered by an OB/GYN or a Certified Nurse Midwife.  “We deliver the same low-risk care to women such as vaginal births, basic lab tests and treatment,”   Bayes said.  She added that complicated gynecological problems, such as fibroids that may need to be treated with a hysterectomy, are referred to physicians.   “I have extra time to spend with women and I can spend that time teaching them how to stay healthier. When my patients leave their visits, they know more about their bodies than when they came in.”
